
CALL FOR APPLICATION: Tokyo Vernacular Workshop (Reading the Layered Urban Environment around Akihabara)
Global Problem-Based Learning (GPBL) in Tokyo: Tokyo Vernacular Workshop (Reading the Layered Urban Environment around Akihabara) hosted by Shibaura Institute of Technology (SIT) in collaboration with Kasetsart University, Chiangmai University, and Maejo University.
We are pleased to invite applications for the 2026 Global Problem-Based Learning program in Tokyo under the theme “Tokyo Vernacular Workshop (Reading the Layered Urban
Environment around Akihabara)” This 10-day international workshop, hosted by Shibaura Institute of Technology (SIT), provides students with direct exposure to real-world urban environmental challenges through field visits, collaborative design tasks, and cultural exchange.

Program Dates: September 1 – September 10, 2026 (10 days)
Location: Tokyo and surrounding areas, Japan
Eligibility: Open to students from all departments and all programs at Faculty of Architecture, Kasetsart University. Applicants must currently be in their 2nd year or above at the time of application.
Number of Participants: 8
Scholarship Support: 60,000–80,000 yen (based on GPA and English score). Support provided by Faculty of Architecture, Kasetsart University TBC
Selection Criteria:
Applicants with strong academic performance (GPA) and English proficiency will be prioritized. Preference may also be given to students who have not previously joined international programs to expand participation opportunities.
The faculty selection process was based on two main components:
- Academic performance (GPA) accounting for 50%
- English language proficiency accounting for 50%
Accepted English proficiency test scores include TOEIC, TOEFL, IELTS, CU-TEP, KU-EPT, TOEIC Bridge, and other verifiable standardized English tests.
EF SET Test scores and non-proctored online tests are not accepted.
As applicants submitted different English test results, including TOEIC, IELTS, TOELF etc, the faculty converted the scores into a comparable standard scale to ensure fairness in the evaluation process before calculating the final weighted score.
In accordance with the program announcement, applicants who had not previously received scholarships under similar international programs were given priority consideration.
The selection process was conducted by the Faculty of Architecture selection committee, and the committee’s decision is considered final.
Please note that shortlisted candidates may be invited for an additional interview to confirm their English communication ability, interpersonal skills, social etiquette, and readiness for participation in an international environment. Details are to be confirmed (TBC).
Tentative Program Schedule:
1 September 2026: Arrival in Tokyo, Japan
2 September 2026: Orientation and lectures at Shibaura Institute of Technology, Toyosu Campus
3 September 2026: Study visit to the Japan Open-Air Folk House Museum, Kawasaki
4 September 2026: Field study in the Akihabara district
5 September 2026: Continued field study in the Akihabara district
6 September 2026: Visit to the Tokyo National Museum and continued field study in the Akihabara district
7 September 2026: Design workshop at Shibaura Institute of Technology, Toyosu Campus
8 September 2026: Design workshop at Shibaura Institute of Technology, Toyosu Campus
9 September 2026: Final presentation at Shibaura Institute of Technology, Toyosu Campus
10 September 2026: Departure from Tokyo and return to Bangkok
